Merchant Center Feed Optimization

Merchant Center Feed Optimization, the Real Lever in Shopping

Shopping campaigns have no keywords. Google decides which searches a product is relevant to by reading the feed — so the feed is the closest thing to keyword targeting a Shopping advertiser has. Merchant Center feed optimization rewrites what the store exported into what people actually search, which is usually the largest available improvement in the account.

Why Choose Us

The Feed Is the Targeting

Most feeds are whatever the platform exported. That describes products the way the catalogue does, not the way people search.

Titles Rewritten

Brand, type and distinguishing attributes in the order someone would type them, with the important words first.

Attributes Completed

Size, colour, material, GTIN and condition — missing attributes limit where a product can appear.

Categories Corrected

Google product category set accurately rather than left to guessing.

Supplemental Feeds

Improvements layered on without editing the store, which keeps it maintainable.

Custom Labels

Margin, season and performance tiers, so campaigns can bid on things that matter.

Feed Optimization, Explained

What Makes a Feed Underperform?

Four issues, all of them present in most exported feeds.

Audit My Feed →
  1. 1

    Titles Written for the Catalogue

"SKU-4471 Blue" matches nothing anyone searches for.

  2. 2

    Missing Attributes

Without size, colour or GTIN, products are excluded from searches that specify them.

  3. 3

    Wrong Category

An inaccurate product category puts the item in the wrong competitive set.

  4. 4

    No Custom Labels

Nothing to segment on, so campaigns cannot separate high-margin products from low.

Our Process

How We Optimise a Feed

Diagnosis first: which products are getting impressions, which are not, and what the difference is.

  1. Audit the Feed

Field completeness, title quality and category accuracy across the catalogue.

  2. Find the Silent Products

Items receiving no impressions, which usually points at a data problem.

  3. Rewrite Titles

Starting with the products that matter most commercially.

  4. Complete and Label

Attributes filled, categories corrected, custom labels applied.

  5. Apply and Measure

Through supplemental feeds, with impressions compared before and after.

Feed Structure

What a Supplemental Feed Solves

The usual objection to feed work is that it means changing the store. It does not have to.

What is a supplemental feed?

A secondary data source that overrides or adds to fields in the primary feed, matched by product ID. It lets you rewrite titles, add custom labels and complete attributes without touching the store platform.

That matters practically: rewriting product titles in the store changes what customers see on the site, which is frequently not what you want and usually requires someone else's approval.

It also makes the work reversible. A supplemental feed can be removed and the original data returns, which lowers the risk of trying something.

What are custom labels for?

They are arbitrary fields you define — margin band, season, bestseller status, clearance — that Shopping campaigns can then segment and bid on.

Without them, campaign segmentation is limited to the categories the catalogue happens to use, which rarely correspond to how the business thinks about profitability.

The most common useful one is margin band, because it lets bidding pursue the products worth selling rather than the products that sell — the distinction that decides whether a good ROAS is actually good.

FAQ

Questions,answered.

Feed optimization improves the product data submitted to Google — titles, attributes, categories and custom labels — because that data, not a keyword list, determines which searches a product can appear for.

Shopping Has No Keywords, So the Feed Is the Keywords

Advertisers coming to Shopping from search look for the keyword list and find there is not one. Targeting therefore feels like something Google does rather than something you control.

The control exists; it is just in a different place. Every decision about which searches a product can appear for is made by reading the feed — the title, the attributes, the category. Change those and you change the targeting.

This is why feed work outperforms bid work in most Shopping accounts, and why it is usually skipped. Rewriting four thousand product titles is tedious, unglamorous and the largest lever available.
