Social Media Branding

Social Media Branding That Is Recognisable at Thumbnail Size

Brand guidelines are written for pages and packaging, then applied to a feed where the logo is thirty pixels wide and half the content is seen without any brand marking at all. Social media branding adapts the identity to that context — recognisable small, consistent in voice, and identifiable by treatment rather than by a mark.

Why Choose Us

We Design for the Actual Context

A brand system that only works at poster size does not work on social.

Recognisable Small

At the size an avatar and a thumbnail actually appear.

Identifiable Without a Logo

Because much content carries no mark at all.

Voice Documented

So several people sound like one organisation.

Consistent Across Accounts

Including the ones other departments run.

Adapted, Not Ignored

Working from your existing identity rather than replacing it.

Social Branding, Explained

What Has to Adapt?

Four things that behave differently in a feed.

Discuss Your Brand →
  1. 1

    The Avatar

A full logo is illegible at that size. Most brands need a reduced mark.

  2. 2

    Colour

What works on white may vanish against a dark feed.

  3. 3

    Typography

Sizes set for print are unreadable on a phone thumbnail.

  4. 4

    Voice

Written guidelines matter more here, because more people post.

Our Process

How We Adapt Brands for Social

Test the existing identity at real sizes, then adapt what fails.

  1. Test at Size

Avatar and thumbnail, on a phone.

  2. Adapt the Marks

A reduced version where the full logo fails.

  3. Build Templates

Recognisable without relying on a logo.

  4. Document Voice

    So multiple people sound consistent.

  5. Roll Out

Across every account, including the forgotten ones.

Scale

Why the Full Logo Fails as an Avatar

It was designed to be read, at a size where reading is impossible.

What happens at avatar size?

A horizontal logo with a wordmark becomes an illegible smear. Circular cropping removes the ends of it. On a phone it occupies a space smaller than a fingernail.

The result is an account that is not visually identifiable in a feed, which is the one job the avatar has.

Most identities need a reduced mark for this — a monogram, a symbol, a fragment of the logo that survives the crop. It is a small piece of design work and it is skipped constantly.

How is content identified without a logo?

By treatment: a consistent colour, a recognisable type style, a layout pattern, a way of framing images. People recognise these before they read anything.

This matters because much social content carries no branding at all — a video, a photograph, a plain text post. If the only identifier is a logo, that content is anonymous.

Building a treatment that is recognisable on its own is more useful on social than any logo placement rule, and it is the part most brand guidelines do not cover.

Social media branding adapts a brand identity to social contexts — an avatar that reads at small size, templates recognisable without a logo, documented voice, and consistency across accounts.

The Avatar Was an Illegible Smear

Brand guidelines specify the logo and its clear space, its minimum size in millimetres, and how it may be reproduced. All of it written for print and applied conscientiously.

The avatar is a circle roughly a fingernail across on a phone. A horizontal wordmark placed in it becomes a grey blur with the ends cropped off, and the account becomes visually unidentifiable in a feed.

The fix is a reduced mark and takes a designer an afternoon. It is skipped because the guidelines did not anticipate the format, and nobody looked at the result on a phone.
